    taco spice blend

This homemade gluten free taco seasoning is easy to make, and frugal, too! Make this spice blend and store it in your pantry so that you’re ready for Taco Tuesday! This blend is perfect for making tacos, burritos, fajitas, and more.

Sometimes store bought seasoning blends can be a bit of a hazard for those with food allergies.

There are vague ingredients, like, “natural flavors.” Or there are extra starches or thickeners that are not gluten free. Or there may be simply too much sodium.

For all of the above reasons, I prefer to make my own taco seasoning at home. It’s so easy to do, and it’s very inexpensive, too! We also enjoy making homemade BBQ Chicken Rub and homemade BBQ sauce.

Homemade spice blends can make a great gift during the holiday season! Package this up in a cute jar with a colorful label and some baker’s twine for a handmade gift that’s delicious and festive.

I think you’ll love the flavor and convenience of this homemade blend. You can easily adjust the spice level to your taste.

    Ingredient Notes

This blend uses chili powder, paprika, salt, garlic powder, onion powder, cumin and sugar. If your family likes a spicier blend, you can easily add more chili powder or even some cayenne pepper.

I prefer to use McCormick single spices with the red cap. I have always been very happy with their response when I have called to ask about their allergen protocols. Please call and make sure that any product is safe for your particular needs.

    How to Use

Use this blend just as you would use a store bought blend. Start out with about 2-3 Tablespoons of taco spice per pound of meat. You can use this to season ground beef, ground bison, or chicken breasts or thighs.

This works well for turkey tacos or any other recipe that would require taco seasoning.

    Instructions

    Make the taco seasoning:

    • Combine all spices in a jar and mix together.

    How to use taco seasoning:

    • If you are making ground beef, I would start out with about 2-3 Tablespoons of seasoning and a half cup of water per pound of beef. You could add a tablespoon or two of tomato paste as well.

    Notes

Nutrition facts are for the amount of taco seasoning that you would use to season a pound of meat, not an individual serving.
Store taco seasoning in a glass jar with a lid. It should stay fresh in a cool, dry place, for at least 6 months.
If you’d like to make this blend hotter, you can add some cayenne pepper to the mix. Add a little at a time until it’s up to your preferred level of heat.
