Pennsylvania Nine Bean Soup.

A warm and comforting nine bean soup for winter.

  • 2 1/4 cups dried beans any mixed bean blend will work
  • 22 ounces Italian style tomatoes
  • 1 large onion chopped
  • 1/2 pound ham chopped
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper


  1. Soak dried beans overnight. In the morning, drain them and put them in a large pot along with 2 quarts water and the ham.
  2. Bring to a boil, then simmer for three more hours.

  3. Add all other ingredients, plus more water if needed. Simmer for at least one hour more.
  4. Serve with warm bread and butter, or a green salad for a delicious meal.
