how to use up old crayons and make larger crayons for kids to use!

I don’t know about you, but we have tons of broken crayons at our house. I was wondering what to do with all these little bits, when I came across the idea in the book Super Baby Food by Ruth Yaron to melt them into larger crayon “cupcakes.” I didn’t do it exactly the way she suggests – here’s what I did:

    1. Line a mini-muffin tin with paper liners – I used two in each compartment. Sort your broken, peeled crayons by color and fill each cup up about ¾ full.

    2. Melt the crayons in a 250 degree oven for about 12-15 minutes. I had to keep checking them. It took longer than the 5 minutes that was suggested in the book. I kept my eye on them to make sure that they didn’t start to smoke.

    3. Let the crayons cool, then peel off the paper and have fun!

This was a really fun little project for my little guy. He loved sorting the crayons by color and then peeling the wrappers off once they were cool. A great way to spend a rainy morning!

You can also use silicone shape molds as well. You really don’t need cupcake papers.
