DIY: Easy Upcycled Patriotic Vase.

We haven’t done as many little craft projects around here lately, but the other day my son asked if we could make something, so I thought we’d make something patriotic.  He’s very into recycling these days (thank you, Sid the Science Kid), so I thought we could make a couple little vases with some empty cans I had sitting on the counter.

Here’s what we did.  You will need:

craft supplies

:: empty cans
:: red craft paint
:: white electrical tape
:: card stock
:: blue glitter
:: glue

We started out by painting the cans.  My son painted one, and I painted the other.  Just be careful, the inside of the can rim is sharp!  Remind your kids not to touch the inside of the can.

We let them dry overnight, and then I cut strips of white tape and we placed them around the can.  I cut out stars (you can trace a star cookie cutter if you have one), and my son handled the glittering.

Once the glitter and glue was dry, we affixed the stars to the front of the cans with glue.

That’s it!  You could even use them to hold plastic silverware at a Fourth of July party.  I chose to put flowers in them for a patriotic display.  Spider mums, actually, because they reminded me of fireworks.

    Love this idea. I’ve seen the cans covered in paper, but I like the idea of painting them. My husband knows not to throw out the cans or jars without asking because I might have a project idea! I’m visiting from the Two Twenty-One link party.
