Try a different take on fruit crisp by using Asian pears. This pear crisp is sweet, delicious, and has a buttery, crunchy topping that is the perfect finishing touch.
There’s something so nice about a warm, fruit based dessert. Cold weather makes me crave apple pie, blueberry cranberry crisp, or now this wonderful pear crisp.
If you’re in the mood for a homemade dessert, but are short on time, a crisp is a great option. Pear crisp requires a lot less effort than a pie – there’s no crust to chill and roll out, just a simple topping made of oats, sugar, and vegan buttery spread. But even though it’s simpler, this is still a delicious dessert – warm, sweet, and comforting.
This would be perfect for Thanksgiving or for dessert after Sunday dinner.

Ingredient Notes
- Pears – Asian pears are round pears that look kind of like apples. They are firm, like apples, and have a sweet flavor with a floral note. They work very well in this crisp, but if you can’t find them, feel free to substitute a different variety of pear.
- Gluten Free Oats – If you are gluten free, make sure you purchase certified gluten free oats, which are free from cross contamination with wheat. One brand to look for is GF Harvest oats, which are made in an allergy friendly facility.
- Vegan Buttery Spread – We like the Earth Balance Soy Free Vegan Buttery Spread that comes in a tub, but you could also use the baking sticks of you prefer.
- Sugar – I used organic cane sugar, but you could also use light brown sugar or coconut sugar if you like.
Step by Step Instructions
- Put the gluten free oats, gluten free flour blend, and sugar in a bowl. Add the vegan buttery spread and use a pastry blender to mix it together.
- Peel and slice the pears and place them in a baking dish. Sprinkle the oat mixture on top of the pears.
- Bake at 375 degrees F for about 35 minutes.
- Serve warm. You can enjoy this plain, or top it with a scoop of your favorite dairy free ice cream or whipped topping.
Substitutions
- If you’d rather make this with a different variety of pear, try Bosc pears or D’Anjou pears. Either would work well.
- Feel free to use regular butter if you are not dairy free.
- If you’d like to add some more crunch, feel free to add some seeds or nuts to the oat mixture if that works for your diet.
