There’s nothing like a frosty peanut butter banana milkshake! This is just the thing for a quick snack or even a delicious breakfast!
Do you remember when you were little and went to a restaurant (Big Boy here in the Midwest), and ordered a milkshake and they brought it to you in a fancy glass and it tasted like the best milkshake ever? Or when you were older and would drive through Steak and Shake and get the cookies and cream milkshake and that was the best milkshake ever?
I kind of miss that. When we cut out dairy, most of our ice cream and/or milkshake runs came to an end. That’s not the end of the world, of course, especially since restaurant milkshakes are super sugar filled.
We do make ice cream milkshakes at home sometimes, but one of my very favorite healthy treats is a milkshake with a frozen banana base. Frozen bananas are a great base for a milkshake because they are naturally sweet, inexpensive, and become creamy and thick when blended.
You can add lots of different ingredients to the banana base, but one of my favorite combinations is this peanut butter banana milkshake.
We keep frozen banana slices in the freezer so that when we want to make a peanut butter banana milkshake, they are ready to go. The easiest way to freeze bananas is to slice them and lay them flat on a cookie sheet, then freeze until solid. Once they are frozen, place the banana slices into ziploc bags and store in the freezer until you need to use them. I let them thaw for just a few minutes before I toss them in the blender to make these peanut butter banana milkshakes.
If you have a peanut allergy, sunbutter works very well in this recipe – I’ve tried it!
Peanut Butter Banana Milkshake.
- 2 frozen bananas cut into coins
- 3 Tablespoons peanut butter or sunbutter
- ½ cup non-dairy milk of your choice
- ¼ cup dairy free chocolate chips or chocolate chunks for topping
- sea salt flakes
Let the frozen banana coins thaw slightly on the counter so that they will be easier to blend.
Place the banana coins, peanut butter, and non-dairy milk in a blender and blend until smooth. Add a bit more milk if mixture is too thick.
Pour milkshakes into two glasses.
Top with dairy free chocolate chips and sea salt flakes. Enjoy!

My favorite part about ordering a milkshake from a restaurant is the fact that they give you that metal flask with the rest of the milkshake that won’t fit in the glass, so that you’re eating like a year’s supply of ice cream in one sitting, ha! Anyhoo, I absolutely LOVE shakes, and prefer using banana and either almond or coconut milk these days. Gotta keep things healthy, ya know?! I’m loving this peanut butter idea you’ve got going on – I must make this shake for dessert tonight!

Oh yea, I definitely miss those days drinking milkshakes out of a metal cup. I hardly drink milkshakes anymore! I do LOVE adding frozen bananas to my drinks though. I need to try this milkshake this weekend!
