Allergy friendly muddy buddies are so delicious! Chex cereal is coated in chocolate, sunbutter, and powdered sugar to make this a deliciously addictive treat!

Summertime is here, and it’s time to think about snacks for road trips! One of our favorite things to bring on the road is nut free chex mix. That’s our favorite savory snack. Our favorite sweet snack to bring on the road is similar – nut free muddy buddies.
We love this easy snack. I have fond memories of making muddy buddies in high school and college, and eating wayyyy more of it than I would be comfortable doing now! :) I love making this for my boys to enjoy, using sunbutter in place of peanut butter.
I know this isn’t a groundbreaking recipe or anything, but it is a family favorite, and I did want to share it with you. I make this pretty often, and it always disappears. Some people call it puppy chow – whatever you call it, it’s delicious!

Ingredient Notes
- Chex – I like to use a mix of rice chex and corn chex. You can use one or the other if you prefer!
- Dairy Free Chocolate Chips – Enjoy Life dark chocolate chips are my favorite chocolate chips to use for muddy buddies. I love the dark chocolate with the sunbutter.
- Sunbutter – Sunbutter is our favorite seed butter, but you can make this recipe with wowbutter or even pumpkin seed butter if you like.
- Powdered Sugar – I like Wholesome brand powdered sugar. It’s corn free and vegan. You can find it at Whole Foods or Fresh Thyme or order it from Amazon.
Top Tip
Put the chocolate coated Chex in two separate ziploc bags, and add powdered sugar to both. It will help the Chex to get coated more evenly if they are not crowded into one bag.

This is the first time I made this allergy friendly version. These turned out great. Making for a coop class with lots of allergies. Like that it only took a few simple ingredients. These were actually easier to make than the original recipe. Thanks so much!

Another great recipe! I made these for my teenage son, who I have to say smiled when he ate these. Now my husband, myself and my other son ate them too and loved them. They are soooooo yummy! They were easy to make too!

If you can’t find sunbutter do you think tahini or sesame paste might also work? I’m based in Asia so sunbutter isn’t possible to find.

I’m so excited for peanut butter-free Puppy Chow (that’s what we call it where I’m from in NC)! Yum!

Yay! I hope you love it!

I have ZERO self-control around muddy buddies and these look downright dangerous, Kelly! I would definitely have to make a double-batch. ;)
Bethany
Yum! This looks so good, and I love that it is made without peanut butter!
