Try this simple and tasty recipe for creamed asparagus on toast. Fresh asparagus is cooked in a creamy sauce, and served on toasted bread. This is the perfect gluten free and dairy free breakfast or lunch recipe.

Creamed asparagus on toast is a recipe that we’ve enjoyed for years at our house. It all started when Darryl’s mom made this for me when we were dating.
I’d never had asparagus any other way other than roasting it, but once I tasted this veggie in a cream sauce on toast, I was smitten. This is one of my very favorite ways to enjoy asparagus.
If you love creamy food, but are dairy free, you might be wondering if it’s possible to make a creamy sauce with dairy products. It is possible! This sauce is delicious and flavorful, even without the dairy.
Try this out soon for your next breakfast or brunch! I think you’ll love it. If you need to serve more people, you can easily double or triple this recipe.

Ingredient Notes
- Asparagus – I like to use thinner stalks of asparagus, because it’s more tender, and it cooks more quickly.
- Gluten Free Flour Blend – We use Namaste Perfect Flour Blend, and it works well to thicken this white sauce.
- Dairy Free Milk – Use a dairy free milk that works for your dietary needs. You will want to pick a neutral tasting milk for the best results.
- Vegan Buttery Spread – We like Earth Balance Soy Free Vegan Buttery Spread, but you could use a different brand if you like.
- Bread – Any bread that you like will be fine. You just need to be able to toast it.
Step by Step Instructions
- Wash the asparagus, and then cut or break off the tough ends. Chop into small pieces.

- Cook the asparagus in vegan buttery spread for about 5 minutes, until it is bright green.

- Stir in the flour, and cook for a minute or two to get rid of the raw taste. Add the dairy free milk and cook over medium heat until the sauce thickens. Season with salt, pepper, and garlic powder.

- Serve over toasted bread or egg free biscuits.

Storage
Store leftovers in the fridge. They should stay fresh for about two days.
